Classical Japanese Reading: Five Questions
KOBUN READING 5
けふ, こゑ, おもふ — how are these words read in modern Japanese?
Choose from three readings and get familiar with classical spelling.
ABOUT THIS GAME
How to play
Five words to start reading classical Japanese aloud.
Choose the modern kana reading of a short word written in historical spelling. Practise ゐ → い, ゑ → え, and changes to は・ひ・ふ・へ・ほ within or at the end of a word.
Each round selects five of twelve words. Check the correct reading and a short explanation after answering. Revisit up to two mistakes, then move automatically to a new round after the result.
Read the word aloud before answering, then say the correct reading again. There is no time limit, so work at your own pace. Familiarity with hiragana is recommended.
