ABOUT THIS GAME
About this game
Connect the words with tools and shapes.
A cooking word in a song or recipe can spark your curiosity. Recognising the shape, tool or technique is another step. Match diagrams with the names of kitchen tools and vegetable cuts, or choose the picture that fits a description. Japanese cutting styles are explained in English.
Kitchen tools has 30 questions covering 15 tools; Cutting styles has 24 questions covering 12 cuts; Measuring has 6 questions. Japanese names adds 30 questions about the same 15 tools: choose a romanised Japanese name for a picture, or match a name to a picture. After answering, see the Japanese spelling and English name. A line over a vowel (ō or ū) marks a long vowel. Picture choices show their names after you answer. Compare shapes and uses, and learn the difference between volume and weight. Measuring questions use Japanese recipe conventions: a tablespoon is 15mL, a teaspoon is 5mL and a standard cooking cup is 200mL. A rice-measuring cup is 180mL; cup sizes differ between countries.
Play five questions at a time, then review up to two questions you missed. The results screen stays open until you start another round, so you can practise at your own pace. The names you learn can help you understand cooking lessons and recipes.
